9 Things I’ve Learned in College (Outside of the Classroom)

1.  Don’t Change Your Passion For Someone Else

Don’t let anyone influence you that what you have a passion for is stupid and not worthwhile. There are so many times relatives ask me what I’m majoring in or what I wanna be and they actually have the audacity to try to persuade me to choose another. If you truly know what you want to do and accomplish in life, do it. Live life for yourself.

2. It’s Okay To Doubt Your Beliefs

This is the best time to get out and learn about anything and everything! Don’t be afraid to let what you see and learn influence what you’ve grown up learning about. Be open-minded and believe what YOU want. Don’t be afraid of accepting new beliefs and changing your mind.

3. There are Lessons in Everything

There are lessons to learn everywhere, especially in failure. “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.” (Henry Ford) There are lessons even in situations that suck. Look for them and make the best of the situation.

4. Fear Is Only In Your Head

I’ve never watched After Earth, but I’ve watched the trailer and theres this quote “You must realize, that fear is not real. It is a product of the thoughts you create. Do not misunderstand me, danger is very real, but fear is a choice.” This gave me a whole new perspective on fear because it’s true. Fear is only in your head. YOU control what makes you scared. Everything you want is on the other side of fear.

5. You Control Your Happiness

Just like how you control what you’re afraid of, you also control your happiness. Don’t let your happiness depend on something or someone. True happiness comes from within and until you realize this, you won’t be. Don’t be a negative person. Life sucks for negative people because they let it suck.

6. It Sucks For Someone To Lose Trust In You

Don’t do something stupid that’ll let someone who means a lot to you to lose their trust in you. Once you lose it, the only thing on your mind is thinking of ways of how to regain that trust back. You’ll have to work and rebuild that trust from scratch. And just remember, some people don’t forgive as easily and others.

7. It Sucks Worse to Lose Trust In Someone Else

It is so fuxking horrible when you think you know someone and that this person would never do anything to hurt you in any way and that’s exactly what they do. It hurts so much losing trust in someone you had complete faith in. Sometimes it’ll affect you so much that you’d probably lose your faith and trust in everything else. You question how you can trust anyone and anything for awhile. It’ll hurt worse if you love this person and it won’t be easy to forgive. If you see them trying to earn back your trust, sometimes you should let them.

8. Don’t Accept Social Standards

I’m not saying not to accept any of them, but don’t JUST accept them. Don’t be afraid to question and wonder why everything is the way they are. Don’t be afraid to go against them either. They’re just invisible thresholds.

9. It’s Okay To Be Unsure

And who isn’t? It’s okay to not know what you actually want to do in life or if you feel lost because I feel unsure constantly. Don’t worry too much. You’ll figure things out in the end.

Tree Burning🎄

Yesterday I was invited by one of my very close friends, to a Christmas tree burning. This had become a tradition on the island for approximately 30 years now where families bring their dead & dry Christmas trees and pile them up on the beach and have a bonfire while the moon is out. My friend Iosefo’s family has been apart of this tradition for the past 9 years and his Samoan family contributes by helping out with their family’s traditional food.

The one thing I noticed was the lack of Chamorros (locals of Guam) on the beach. They were mainly Americans. The food was very different than what is expected at a local Chamorro party. It was overall different, but a good different.

Walking into the pitch darkness of the beach which could’ve also felt like walking into a jungle of a horror scene, you walk into a crowd of people all gathered at a safe distance around the pile of trees of the past holiday season, anticipating the event. Glow sticks and bongos and Christmas lights. It was like a small-kine festival. It was really cool. The beach was very breezy, which made me semi-regret wearing a dress. The company was awesome as a few of my other friends came as well as Sefo’s family.

I’m told that each year there is a scenario that is played out to start the fire. They just find some creative way to light the trees instead of just simply lighting it. Sefo’s girlfriend, Robin, was telling me of their innovative ideas a couple years ago, one with a catapult, the other with a wrecking ball with a dummy attached to it, which was supposed to Miley Cyrus. (I wish I was there for that one) This year they decided to go all James Franco/Kim Jong-un from The Interview and blast the trees with a tank which was probably made from a lawn mower. They actually had several attempts to “blast” the trees because they kept missing, by the fourth one they finally just decided to blast it up close.

It was really fun and it was a new experience. The energy of the crowd as amazing and there were just good vibes all around. I’m anticipating an invite to the tree burning for next year, and a few years from then🔥

January Inspiration

Various things have changed within the span of January. I’ve met new people, got closer to a few friends, changed little lifestyle habits, and just like how I learned from a plethora of things, I got inspired by a bunch as well.

Let me start off with Ella’s page yet again.

1. We Need To Live More: Easy Yoga Routine

I’ve been meaning to try out yoga for forever and whenever I do, I feel like my body isn’t flexible enough or the moves are too hard. That was until Ella posted a yoga flow on her blog. This inspired me to actually give it a real try and guess what? It was fun and relaxing. I’m actually thinking of trying to incorporate it into a morning routine just because of how much I love the stretches and movements. This also inspired me to download a yoga app from the App Store just to try new yoga flows that I may like. I hope to master a bunch of the more advanced movements in the future, but for right now, I’m really glad I gave it a shot.

2. We Need To Live More: Acai Bowl Recipe

Ella may have posted her acai bowl recipe more than a month ago, but it wasn’t until recently when I thought to try an acai bowl for the first time. I ordered it from a local health encouraged cafe and it was ALRIGHT. It wasn’t something I would order a second time especially for the cost. I remembered Ella’s recipe awhile back and decided to give acai one more chance by buying the Sambazon acai packets and using Ellas’ recipe and it was amazing!! From that point forward acai bowls have been a staple breakfast bowl.

3. Balance App

There’s an app I stumbled upon while browsing within the App Store called Balance, which helps you keep track of doing things you wish you were doing often. One of the set tasks on the app is to “Help Somebody Else”. Although I am a helpful person, I actually gave this task a standard, that the person that I’d help, had to be someone I wasn’t really close to, yet I was able to make a good impact on them, in order for me to check off that I had done the task. That was when the opportunity arose to help out with a former professor’s fundraiser and I was only too pleased to offer to make a kind donation. Helping others feels amazing. The only reward I got was the smile on my professor’s face and a thanks of great appreciation and that was more than enough. This app inspired me to help people when they need it and when I can.

4. @sexylovecakes

One of my best friends, Jenna, and I have made a sort of tradition that we spend Valentines day together. This Valentines we made a plan to make 20 little valentine grams and give them to 20 random people who we think should get them throughout the night. This is sweet and inspiring that you don’t need a valentine to celebrate valentines day and you also don’t need to be sad that you don’t have a valentine. I actually get so excited for valentines day not being pressured with making plans for a boyfriend, but I get to make fun plans with my best friend, which is fuxking cheesy but, isn’t that what valentines is? I’ll be making a post about how the night goes, so be looking out for that!

5. “stop planting your flowers in other people’s gardens if you know they aren’t going to water them”

This is a quote I got via Twitter and this is the story of my life, especially with guys. I can already foreshadow that this person wouldn’t be genuinely interested in me as more than a friend, yet regardless, you can’t help but fall emotionally until you get hurt. Metaphorically, you keep planting your flowers in their garden and watch them die due to negligence. This inspired me to stop “planting my flowers” with anyone and to find someone who has MiracleGrow to nurture them.

I hope you guys were inspired within this past month of the new year to become a better person and to self-improve!
